The Festival Weekend is the grand finale of the Capital Plein Air Festival — when artists take to the outdoors to paint, the public comes to watch, and the city comes alive with colour, creativity and connection.

Artists Painting National Monuments
Whats on:
On Saturday, artists will be spread throughout Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle, capturing its monuments, tree-lined autumn streets, and sweeping views of the lake.
Artist will arrive anytime from 8am onwards to paint throughout the day. You’ll see them scattered around this expansive area on the south side of Lake Burley Griffin, each interpreting the capital’s scenery in their own way.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to stroll the area, observe artists at work, and experience the creative process up close.
Spectating is free — simply wander through and enjoy seeing artworks take shape in real time.
Parking in the Parliamentary Triangle
Free parking is generally available on Saturdays, as paid parking only applies Monday–Friday (8:30 am–5 pm). Check signs for any local restrictions or time limits. There are large car parks near the National Gallery, National Library, and Old Parliament House, all within easy walking distance of painting locations. Use the EasyPark app or ticket machines if payment is required, and allow extra time during busy events.

2-Hour Competition & Art Sale
What’s on:
Sunday marks the final day of the festival, featuring two major highlights:
Exhibition & Art Sale – From 9.30am
Paintings created throughout the week will be judged and displayed, available for viewing and purchase — a rare chance to take home an original plein air painting fresh from the easel.
Quick Draw Competition – 10am
The Festival Finale features a lively two-hour Quick Draw, where artists paint within a set time and location before displaying their finished works for judging and sale.
It’s an energetic celebration of creativity and spontaneity — a favourite for both artists and spectators.
Parking is available right near the foreshore, with several public car parks along Eastlake Parade and Printers Way—all just a short walk to the Fitters Workshop. Most are paid parking zones, even on Sundays, so check signs and use the EasyPark app or nearby ticket machines. Arrive early to secure a spot, as the area can be busy on market days at the Old Bus Depot Markets next door

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the Festival Weekend.
Spectating is free, and no booking is required — simply visit one of the painting locations or the exhibition venue to experience the festival atmosphere.
Artworks created during the event will be available for purchase on Sunday 9.30am to 2pm.
